Marley

This tribute is in loving memory of Marley – a beautiful girl, with deep, soulful brown eyes, who will remain in our hearts forever. Marley’s owners dumped her at a Houston shelter, requesting that she be euthanized, without ever attempting to get her any medical attention. Kind shelter workers treated her with antibiotics and pain medications, then began networking with rescue groups to try and save her life. A member of our GHGSDR Intake team was deeply moved by Ma…rley’s sweet and gentle demeanor. Her sad eyes told the story of a lifetime of abuse and neglect. It was obvious during the drive to our rescue vet that Marley was very ill, and was having trouble breathing. As she drove, our volunteer spoke gently to her, trying to comfort and encourage her. She told her that we would take care of her, and that the pain would soon be gone. When she arrived at our vet, Marley won the hearts of everyone she met. Despite how badly she felt, Marley wagged her tail, and was very loving. She seemed so grateful for all the attention and affection. One of our GHGSDR members was part of the medical team that evaluated Marley and rushed her into surgery. As they worked on her, our group member stroked her fur, and assured her that the suffering would soon be over. Despite their best efforts, it was just too late. Marley’s owners had neglected and mistreated her for far too long. Marley died the same day she arrived at our vet, but we are just now posting this because every time we tried to write it, we were overwhelmed with grief and anger. Our only consolation is that Marley did not die alone, on the cold, hard concrete floor of the shelter where her owners abandoned her. On the last day of her life, she was surrounded by love and compassion. Goodbye, dearest Marley. We are so sorry we couldn’t save you. Run free with the angels, sweet girl. We will see you at the bridge.
