Hi, there. I am Midnight’s foster mom and I have the privilege of introducing her to you and telling you her story. This dog is not a local girl, but was rescued by good Samaritans in Taiwan. Midnight spent her life confined to an outside cage. And, I am not talking about an outdoor chain-link kennel with a dog house. This girl really spent her early life in an actual cage. From the pictures I would say its dimensions were maybe 5’ x 5’ and probably 5’ tall. It reminded me of a large bird cage. The pictures of Midnight in this cage made me cry. And, the sad part of her story doesn’t end there. In early 2015 Midnight’s owner abandoned her and left her in that cage with no food or water, and no way to get out. How horrible!! Now here is where the happy part of Midnight’s story begins. Some wonderful rescuers in Taiwan got her out of there and started Midnight’s journey to a new life. When they first found her, she was near starved and dehydrated. These wonderful people got her the medical and nursing care she desperately needed and showed Midnight what it felt like to be loved and cherished. Midnight was with them for almost a year while she physically recuperated from her terrible ordeal. A short while ago, these rescuers reached out to Great Houston GSD Rescue asking if we would take her into our program. They really wanted Midnight to live in America. We not only said, “yes," we said, “absolutely yes!" What an honor for GHGSDR to be trusted with the life of a dog these rescuers saved and spent a year getting healthy. As Midnight’s foster mom, I am overwhelmed by the privilege to help this girl complete her journey. When I picked Midnight up at the airport and saw her paws touch American soil for the first time, I had a rush of emotion. When Midnight was saved, the Tawian rescuers named her Donna. Our rescue changed it to Midnight, not because she is a black GSD, but because midnight is the “end of yesterday, and the beginning of tomorrow." Her name is symbolic for this final leg of her journey. Here is a video clip of Midnight showing her last day in Taiwan and her first day in America. Hope you enjoy it.

Now to tell you a little about Midnight. I have only had her a short while, but I can tell she is a real jewel. Midnight is thin and will need to gain about 10 lbs to be at optimal weight. Her personality is sweet and playful and, when she is happy, her whole face lights up with this joyful expression. Midnight is this little darling who just captures my eyes and my heart every time I am with her. I just love bending down and giving her hugs and chest scratches. For energy level, Midnight is not high, but she is a young girl with playful energy. When my dogs want to play, Midnight happily obliges. However, when everyone want to settle down, she can calm herself. Midnight does enjoy being with her family. If she is in another room, she does have a voice and will vocalize that she wants to be where everyone is. Midnight is a very smart girl and I started some basic obedience training with her. She is treat motivated and just wants to please. The day after I brought her home I took her for a walk. At first, Midnight was pulling at the leash and walking all over the sidewalk. It just took a couple of corrections and some treats, and within a few minutes, she was heeling by my side. She and I walked 2 miles that day. It was so pleasant walking with her and we both had a good time. I give this example to demonstrate how smart this girl is, and I would ask any adopter to continue her training. Midnight is a young girl and needs to know her boundaries. All she wants to do is please her owners. And, when she knows she did it right, her face lights up and her joy is so contagious. If you are having a bad day, don’t worry, Midnight has a natural ability to turn a frown upside down. For house manners, Midnight is good and she is crate trained. She is still getting used to my house, but I do not see any issues. As with any German Shepherd Dog, Midnight will need an owner committed to exercise, training, and patience, all wrapped up with loving and cherishing her.

If you want to visit with Midnight, please complete an application with her name. Midnight is such a darling and I would so enjoy introducing her to you face to face. This girl has come so far and her “going forward” attitude just humbles me. Midnight does not look back at her first year in the cage. She lives in the present and makes each moment happy.
