Hello, my name is Harley!

Harley is a charming boy who came to GHGSDR in early November.  His owner was unable to provide the care he needed after Harley fractured his left elbow, so he was surrendered to a veterinarian.  He was cared for by the veterinary clinic, but went without the expensive orthopedic surgery he desparately needed to repair his injury.  When GHGSDR stepped in, Harley was in amazingly good spirits and his general health was better than most of the unfortunate dogs who wind up in situations like this.  He was completely unable to use his left front leg, but he was not about to let that stand in the way of greeting his new foster mom with loving kisses and tail wags.

Harley was xrayed the following day.  His xrays confirmed he had fractured his olecranon process, or “funny bone” in his left elbow.  We suspect his injury was possibly the result of being hit by a car.  Because of the complexity of the injury, he required the care of a specialist, and so Harley curled up in the backseat  early one morning to head with his chauffer to Austin to receive top notch care provided by Dr. Kirk Lewis.  Harley's surgery went amazingly well, and his foster mom was able to stay with him through his whole procedure.  He is on pretty strict orders to minimize activity during his recovery, which Harley has interpretted as “rest on the bed or the couch for as many hours as you can each day”!

Harley is certainly enjoying himself in his foster home.  He has free range of the house at all times, even when his foster mom goes to work.  He is crate trained, but crating him has not been necessary.  He loves his short walks outside, but they are very limited right now until his doctor gives the “all clear” on his recovery.  When Harley isn't soaking up belly rubs or laying on the couch, he enjoys shredding stuffed animals, and the more white fluff he can pull out of them the better.  He always spits the stuffing out to the side, and when the toy is sufficiently destroyed, he lays down satisfied while watching his foster mom pick up his artwork.  He also loves tennis balls, and plays like a puppy chasing and pouncing on them.  He can destroy a tennis ball in very short order, and he believes that tennis ball halves are just as much fun as the whole ball!  He has not been allowed to play any games of chase due to his injury, but there is little doubt he would love a good game of ball.

Harley gets along very well with his foster brother, a 2 year old male GSD.  They play together a little bit, but again, Harley's exercise and rough housing is currently limited.  He does seem to be a bit dominant, and would probably do best as an only dog or with a submissive dog.  He may surrender better to a female.  Harley has coaxed the neighbor's young puppy to come play with him on a few occassions, and he is very gentle and loves to play with her.  He absolutely, positively, under no circumstances is cat safe.   He gave the vet hospital's resident cat quite a scare, and must go to a home with no cats!

Harley absolutely loves to go for rides, and he is a great traveller.  He knows the tellers at the drive up window at the bank, and waits eagerly for his treat to magically appear from the canister.  He even know the sound of the tube arriving in the machine, and he can hardly contain his excitement.  In his foster home he is relaxed, and sweet.  He barks once when someone knocks, and then welcomes them into the house.

Harley sits politely while waiting for his food, he knows sit, down, stay, come and most other basic obedience.  He loves to shake hands, lays down perfectly for brushing and toe nail trims, loves to have his teeth brushed, and is quite a gentleman about most everything.  He is strong and smart and occassionally needs to be reminded who is in charge, but he truly has a heart of gold.  He will have plenty of energy for an active family once his doctor has lifted his restrictions, and he can't wait to meet  the person or family he can call his own!
